Twitter’s latest mobile trend sees over 100 cities around the world gaining access to location specific trending topics. The new capability will be extremely useful for small and medium sized businesses, which will be able to react to and influence local topics on Twitter, thus reaching out to a more specific target audience.
In the UK alone, 12 cities have gained localised access including Belfast, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, Portsmouth and Sheffield. They join London, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, which have had regional trends since 2010.
Localised trending topics allow users to get a greater feel for what is going on in their area. It allows them to follow local conversations, debates, topics and notable people more easily; it also makes it easier for people to reach out to others in their community. The new capability will also allow prominent people and businesses to be linked to an area via local recommendations.
Twitter announced the additional cities via a blog post: “By viewing Trends in these cities, it’s easier than ever before to find out what’s going on in your area and to get involved in the conversations. Regional Trends give you a great flavour of what’s happening in different parts of the UK.”
