PayPal today revealed the findings of its 2013 Global Holiday Shopping Study of more than 4,500 consumers from across the world. The survey found that increasing numbers of people are shopping on mobile devices and online in the run up to Christmas, with many looking for a queue-free and more flexible shopping experience this year.
The survey discovered that most consumers (81%) plan to do Christmas shopping on their smartphone, tablet, or online this year. A quarter of respondents indicated this would be their first time Christmas shopping on a smartphone or tablet.
The main reasons that consumers gave for mobile shopping this Christmas are not having to wait in a long queue (48%), being able to shop at odd hours of the day or night (46%) and price comparison shopping to find something cheaper (41%).
The study shows that Christmas shopping is a significant cause of stress. While nine in ten admit witnessing some embarrassing behaviour during Christmas shopping, nearly half of respondents (45%) confess to embarrassing themselves:
- 17% admitted to yelling at a family member;
- 13% pushed ahead of others in line;
- 8% yelled at a store employee;
- 7% confessed to parking in spaces reserved for handicapped people.
For those on a tight budget, people will consider cutting out gifts for their friends, their boss, and their neighbours, although less than 1% would dare to cut their mother from their gift list.
Of the 81% of respondents who plan to do their shopping on a smartphone, tablet or online this year, 31% said that they plan to do more than half of their shopping online or by mobile device.
