Media professionals with an interest in the developing world are invited to apply to the summer 2014 round of the Simon Cumbers Media Fund which is designed to facilitate more and better quality media coverage of development issues in the Irish media.
The Fund is open to all media disciplines and particularly welcomes proposals from journalists wishing to report on the modern reality of life in developing countries, including the areas of innovation, growth, and entrepreneurship.
Announcing the latest funding round, Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello TD said, “This is a very exciting time for journalists to travel to the developing world and to Africa, in particular. The continent is growing and trading with the world more than ever. There has been real progress in improving health and education outcomes and there are greater opportunities for people to earn a livelihood and provide for their families. But some of this growth has been unequal and many challenges remain.
“The fund provides a unique opportunity for journalists to uncover these stories, challenge stereotypes and stimulate public debate about important development issues. The fund is designed to foster greater public understanding of Ireland’s role in international development, including the work of Irish Aid, the Government’s programme for overseas development.”
Photographers who apply to the summer 2014 round to cover a development story can also apply for funding to mount a photographic exhibition. Judges will assess their application against criteria including the reach of the exhibition and its potential to further raise understanding of development issues among Irish audiences.
A workshop for prospective applicants to the summer 2014 round will take place on Friday, 4th April in the Irish Aid Centre, 31 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1 from 11am-1pm, during which representatives from the Fund and Irish Aid will be on hand to provide details of themes and guidelines that must be observed by applicants.
The Fund was set up by Irish Aid in 2005 in memory of the late Irish journalist and cameraman, Simon Cumbers.
The deadline for the receipt of submissions to the summer 2014 round isFriday, 9th May at 5pm.
