nearForm welcomes influential Silicon Valley engineer to Waterford-based team

nearForm has today welcomed Eran Hammer, formerly of Walmart, the creator and maintainer of the Node.js framework hapi.js, to the nearForm team to help guide the company’s continued growth.

nearForm teaming up with Hammer is a particular coup for the three year old company, based in the 10,000-person town of Tramore in Ireland. Hammer is the influential creator of the Node.js framework hapi.js, which is used by multiple Fortune 500 companies including Walmart, PayPal, Yahoo, and many others.

He is also internationally-known for leading the software development team at Walmart that transformed the US retail giant’s mobile ecommerce platform to Node.js and managed two extremely successful and uneventful Black Fridays, the busiest shopping day of the year.

Eran's past roles include Director of Web Standards at Yahoo! and lead author of the OAuth protocol. After a decade on Wall Street - his last role was at Citibank as Vice President of Engineering for the derivatives market - Eran founded Nouncer in 2007, a social content distribution startup.

Founded three years ago, nearForm has been expanding rapidly. The company is on course to have 150 staff in Tramore by the end of the year, having announced 100 new jobs at the start of April. Recent new clients in addition to Qualcomm, Intel, Universal, littleBits, DPD and Condé Nast mean that nearForm is now the world’s largest Node.js company. The company has trebled in staff and revenue year-on-year.

Speaking on the announcement, Hammer says he sees a massive opportunity for nearForm: “nearForm has been on the cutting edge of large-scale Node.js engineering and the leading force behind the growing popularity of the microservices architecture. I am excited about the many possibilities of combining the two worlds - hapi.js and microservices - into a simple and powerful foundation for the next generation of web and enterprise applications. nearForm opens the door to introduce hapi to a new category of developers by combining the powers of Seneca and the hapi.js framework.”

nearForm CEO and co-founder Cian O’Maidín said, “I want to extend a big welcome to Eran. We’re delighted that he chose to come to nearForm after leaving Walmart. We have been quietly growing as a Node.js consulting company over the last three years. We’re on a major growth spurt and reaching critical mass. We are now the biggest Node.js experts in the world and growing at a rate of 10 people per month. Eran’s involvement is a major endorsement of nearForm. Expect some very interesting announcements over the coming months.”
